This leaves you with like 4-5k new cards in the 17k step 2 deck to do during all of M3, plus your already mature cards (I recommend max internal of 6 months, debatably 3-4 months). My school also have MD’s give a few lectures on more clinical based stuff, so it isn’t like I am totally wasting my time learning Step 2 stuff. It will only help you understand your organ block material better. Add in the 2-3 hours of relevant OME during your pre-clinical organ block and then unlock the cards under the OME tag. Keep those mature and you have significantly decreased your Anki workload during M3, especially during IM. Having connections and calling in favors to get interviews is the SINGLE most important yet highly undervalued part of getting interviews in the residency application process (because it isn't meritorious). And spend the rest of your effort developing relationships and networking. The more important approach IMO is shooting to be average or slightly above average in scores, grades, research numbers/quality, and volunteer numbers/quality (use Residency Explorer to find the averages for individual programs of interest). Scores are only used for selecting candidates to interview (they are not used for ranking in the vast majority of cases) and there are other WAAAAAY more valuable aspects of your application you can (and probably should) focus on. At the very least, you will not be screened out with any of those. In reality, a 250, 260, 270, and 280 in the context of the rest of an application (research, volunteerism, grades, LORs, etc) are all going to be viewed essentially the same by PDs. I also spent time studying during my PhD for Step 2 (which is not the norm for most MD/PhDs), but did not spend nearly as much time as you're planning and still managed to score in the 90th percentile.Īs someone who is applying to a competitive specialty right now, I'd add a slightly different perspective to a similar point made by others here: 'exceptional' test scores don't matter as much as we (the applicants) want to believe they do. If you feel it's a good plan, it's absolutely fine to try it out and see how it works for you. Sometimes I'd like to go out (maybe 1 half day/week to get my mind cleared off of PhD stuff). I have a home gym specifically to avoid the time wasted going to and coming back from the gym. Maintain/improve physical health: basically your 'healthy mind, healthy body' mantra.My idea of 'excellent research' is research worthy of being published in the top 10 journals (I already have a 3rd authorship on a Nature paper). Do 'excellent' research: my PhD would be largely in the field of neuroscience (tho my department is bioengineering).I have the following goals in mind for my PhD years and wanna see if y'all think these are reasonable to accomplish: 3-4 years later I'll be getting back to MD and, of course, Step 2 would be after.
